NOAA Predicts a Strong El Niño Winter for 2026–27 — Here's What That Means for Issaquah Roofs

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says El Niño is on track to peak as a strong event this winter, tilting the Pacific Northwest toward drier, warmer conditions than usual. Here's what that actually means for a roof in Issaquah.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has been tracking a strengthening El Niño through 2026, and its outlook now points to a strong event peaking this winter — with real, if easy-to-misread, implications for what Issaquah’s rainy season looks like this year.

What NOAA is actually forecasting

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center ENSO diagnostic discussion, El Niño conditions are present and expected to strengthen through fall and winter 2026–27, with sea surface temperature anomalies in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific already exceeding +1.0°C. NOAA’s forecasters put the odds of a very strong El Niño event during this window at greater than 90%, with roughly a 97% chance the pattern persists into early spring 2027.

For the Pacific Northwest specifically, NOAA’s seasonal precipitation outlook for November 2026 through January 2027 shows a higher probability of below-normal precipitation across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho — consistent with the way El Niño winters typically behave here: the jet stream shifts south, pulling the main storm track toward the southern U.S. and leaving the Northwest drier and milder than an average winter.

What “below normal” doesn’t mean for Issaquah

It’s easy to read “below-normal precipitation” as “a dry winter” and stop there, but two things are worth keeping in mind if you own a roof here.

First, Issaquah’s normal is unusually wet to begin with — 60–65 inches a year, well above Seattle’s totals, driven by the same Cascade-foothill orographic lift that makes this a wetter market than most of the Puget Sound lowlands. A below-normal Issaquah winter can still deliver more rain than a normal winter in a flatter, drier city.

Second, NOAA’s outlook is a seasonal probability, not a storm-by-storm forecast. El Niño years still produce atmospheric-river (“Pineapple Express”) events capable of dumping heavy rain and driving damaging wind in a short window — the seasonal average doesn’t rule out individual storms doing real, sudden damage to a roof, gutters, or trees. A milder average season is not the same thing as a season with no storms worth preparing for.

Where a drier, milder winter can actually work against you

Counterintuitively, a warmer, drier-than-usual winter doesn’t necessarily mean less roof maintenance is needed. Moss and algae growth on Issaquah roofs is driven by a combination of moisture and mild temperatures holding through the wet months — conditions El Niño winters in this region often still provide, even with an overall lower rain total. A below-normal precipitation year doesn’t reliably translate into a below-normal moss year, so this isn’t a season to skip a moss check on that basis alone.

What this means practically

Nothing here changes Washington’s Class A fire-rated roofing requirements for wildland-urban-interface areas, and it doesn’t change how homeowners insurance treats sudden wind damage versus gradual moss-driven deterioration — those stay the same regardless of what kind of winter NOAA is forecasting. What it does mean is a reasonable case for getting a roof looked at before the season gets underway rather than assuming a “drier” forecast buys extra time: milder, wetter-than-it-sounds conditions are still exactly the kind that let moss and minor deferred issues turn into real ones by spring.

A strong El Niño winter is real, NOAA-forecast, and likely to mean a somewhat drier, milder season for Issaquah than average — but “drier than an unusually wet baseline” still means real rain, and it doesn’t reduce the value of a pre-season check.
